21st CCLC Scholars Explore History at Whitney Plantation21st CCLC trip

Scholars from the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) recently participated in an educational field trip to Whitney Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana. The visit provided students with an immersive opportunity to learn about American history through preserved spaces, personal narratives, and memorials dedicated to enslaved people.

Experiential Learning in Action

Guided educators led students through historic buildings and exhibits that highlight the lived experiences of enslaved individuals. Scholars engaged with primary stories and artifacts that deepened their understanding of resilience, culture, and the importance of historical truth.

A particularly meaningful moment for many students was visiting the memorial honoring enslaved children, which encouraged reflection on the human impact of history and the value of remembrance.

Supporting Growth Beyond the Classroom

This field trip reflects 21st CCLC’s commitment to extending learning beyond school walls. By connecting academic content with real-world experiences, scholars strengthened their historical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and empathy for others.

Programs like this continue to inspire students to become informed, thoughtful members of their community.

After-School Tutorial Students Participate in University Visits to Prepare for College

Students participating in after-school tutorial programs were recently afforded the opportunity to visit several universities as part of a High School Day college tour experience. These visits were designed to help students prepare for life after high school by exposing them to college campuses and providing insight into what to expect in higher education.

During the university visits, students explored campus facilities, attended informational sessions, and learned about academic programs, admissions requirements, and student life. The experience allowed students to ask questions, interact with college representatives, and gain a better understanding of the expectations and responsibilities of college students.

The college tours served as an extension of the after-school tutorial program’s mission to support academic growth while encouraging long-term goal setting. By participating in High School Days, students were able to envision themselves in a college environment, build confidence, and begin planning for their future educational pathways.

These university visits reflect a commitment to college and career readiness by providing students with meaningful experiences beyond the classroom. The after-school tutorial program continues to support students by offering academic assistance, enrichment opportunities, and exposure to postsecondary options that prepare them for future success.High School Day
